Should I Work?

Will working hurt my chances of receiving SSD?

Not necessarily. The Social Security Administration recognizes that when people work, they benefit themselves and society as a whole. But there are limits as to how much you can make. If you have questions, you can ask Sternberg, Newman, Shifrin Inc. in Akron, Ohio.

"Substantial Gainful Employment" and SSD

You can be employed and still receive Social Security Disability benefits. But you can't have "substantial gainful employment." Sounds confusing? It isn't.

If you have "substantial gainful employment" (also called substantial gainful activity or SGA), it means that you make more than $940 per month. If you make less than that amount, you may still be eligible to receive benefits. That number can vary depending on your circumstances.

Why work if I can receive benefits?

That's a question only you can answer. But if you are able to work, a better question might be, "Why not?" Working gets you out of the house. It helps you meet people, makes you feel productive and improves your self-esteem.

And of course, it puts some extra money in your pocket.

If you have more questions about the substantial gainful employment or SGA limit, you can find answers at Sternberg, Newman, Shifrin Inc.. Our attorneys and staff will do everything they can to help make sure you receive and keep your benefits.
